Client Description

Montana State University’s Norm Asbjornson Hall, with programming and design provided by ZGF, in association with A&E Architects, is a new 116,709 SF building which houses parts of the College of Engineering and the Honors College. The building is a highly transparent community space that includes a lecture theater seating 300, called Inspiration Hall, and an Innovation Alley, the central commons of the building where projects are on display. One wing of the building accommodates classrooms, including two active learning and one digital classroom. The other wing houses research and teaching laboratories, prototyping and makers spaces. Classrooms and labs are supported by a student success center, informal lounges, and a café. This project is LEED Platinum®.

Project overview

Graphics work along with the architectural concept, designed to educate students in new ways, to be both functional and “a work of art.” A huge white oak stairway creates a space where students can hang out and interact, making the interior space open and inviting. Large words of inspiration are laser etched into the wood. At the top of the stairs, a backlit glass wall is dedicated to Norm Asbjornson, who donated most of the money to make the building possible. Asbjornson said he wanted the hall to set a new standard for teaching and for energy efficiency. A former student of the University, many of his inspirational quotes and lifetime achievements are displayed here. On the second floor the Inspiration Hall backdrop screen consists of a subtle bobcat graphic made from a triangle pattern, cut out of the metal panels. The triangle pattern concept is derived from the University’s logo, abstracted and modernized, much as this new building is a modern advancement in teaching and interaction for the University. This pattern weaves its way through many of the graphics, words and backgrounds throughout the project as a unifying theme.
